A trip back in time …

Using your computer, phone, or tablet to read this post it can be hard to imagine a time before all of this technology. There were simpler times in our not-so-distant past. Imagine for a second life without street lights, life without cars, life with insulated houses to keep us warm. Just for a moment imagine that you are a settler in the mountains of Pennsylvania exploring uncharted territory.

Last weekend we took the opportunity to visit the encampment at the Lancaster County Longrifles 2013 Rendezvous and Black Powder Shoot. This wasn’t our first time visiting this event and we always have a blast. We didn’t want to be too intrusive, but we wanted to capture a piece of this event to share it with all of you!

Take a look at what we saw …

Meet our new writer: J Michael K

Meet the newest member of the Amish Road Show team!

We are happy to announce Michael K as our new writier here at the Amish Road Show. Michael is a talented creative poet, writer and musician. I personally look forward to sharing Michael’s writing, and hope you all enjoy his works. We wanted to give Michael the opportunity to introduce himself …

A word from Michael:

It was a chance happening finding Lancaster County, and some of the most important set of events that has happened to me. Lancaster, and closer to my heart my town of Ephrata, has made me the man I am today. It also gives me constant inspiration for my art.

In addition to being a writer and poet I’m also a working musician. My first album was recorded on East Franklin Street in Ephrata. That was 5 years ago in the first home I ever bought. It eventually landed me a very small record deal with the very lovely people running Polar Recordings, a label based in Pittsburgh.

Strasburg Railroad

Railfanning in Amish Country

I am very excited to present you with my latest episode featuring the Strasburg Railroad. I have been a fan of the Strasburg RR ever since I was a todler. My parents lived just up the street in Paradise, PA during the first few years of my life. So I was no stranger to this piece of American history. I now have the privlage of not only sharing this wonderful destination with my daughter, but with all of you as well.

You’ll get to ride on beautifully restored Victorian era rail cars and you also get to enjoy the historic East Strasburg station. The Strasburg RR was founded in 1832, making it 180 years old. It’s a great way to take your children on a fun activity, but also make it educational. Throughout your ride on the train the railroad staff will provide you with lots of historic information on the railroad as well as the surrounding area. You probably already know how beautiful the Amish countryside can be, but now you get to learn a little bit about the area’s rich history.

Join me and take a glimpse at what the Strasburg RR has to offer. Then be sure to leave a comment below telling us how much you love the Strasburg Railroad, or maybe even your favorite Strasburg Railroad memory.

Second Friday in Lititz, PA – April 2012

Discover the Small Town of Lititz, PA

Just over five miles north of Lancaster City is the beautiful and historic Lititz, PA. This is such a great little town that’s not so little anymore. They are constantly growing and the main street is bustling with activity. With a long history dating back to their founding in 1756, the old colonial buildings that line main street, and the highly embraced entrepreneurial spirit that fills their small shops, this is definitely one place you should stop by and see for yourself.

On the Second Friday of each month

The Community spirit of Lititz can best be seen on the second Friday of every month (all year round). From 5pm to 9pm this energetic little village truly becomes the place to be. The town’s shops, restaurants, and other businesses all come together to embrace their entrepreneurial spirit and vigor. Showcasing shopping, dining, art, music, and a sense of community.

There is a lot to see and do here. So much so that I’m going to have to make a few trips to see it all. Here is my first episode for the event. Keep in mind that this is all I could handle this month. Be sure to subscribe, likefollow, and circle us to discover more great places next month!
